Why did Spanish colonists begin to rely more heavily on the Atlantic slave trade by the mid-1500s?

During the mid 1500s, the spanish colonists did a lot of construction operations for the colonist. In order to complete these operations, they need a  huge amount of hard labors that they could easily get from the Atlantic Slave Trade
